Profit Agent: Upsell Services

At a glance

One of the Profit Agent's capabilities is acting as your autonomous upsell manager: it finds your best product pairings from your own orders, launches them as experiments, and keeps optimizing for profit on its own — no manual product-picking or discount-guessing.

It never stops testing: offers run as continuous experiments that shift traffic to your most profitable variant over time. And on Shopify Plus, it optimizes across your whole funnel — from the checkout page through to post-purchase — adapting each offer to what the shopper did before.

Why it works

Most upsell tools make you pick products and guess a discount. The Profit Agent doesn't:

  • Learns from your orders. Pairings come from what customers actually buy together — not generic "also viewed" lists.
  • Targets whole carts, not single products. It backs your highest-volume carts, so every experiment gets steady, comparable traffic to optimize — instead of guessing which offer wins at checkout.
  • Tests price, doesn't guess it. Every offer runs at full price, 5% off, and 10% off at once; traffic flows to the winner.
  • Optimizes for profit, not clicks. With cost data, the most profitable variant wins — not just the one that converts.
  • Stays safe. Respects your margin floor, and only discounts when the math proves it's profitable.

How profit is calculated

  • Per-offer margin = post-discount price − product cost (COGS), shown on every offer (e.g. "5% off · 52.1% margin").
  • Margin floor is a hard limit. Any discount tier that would breach your floor is never tested.
  • No COGS → full price only. Without cost data the agent can't prove a discount is safe, so it skips discounts.
  • Dashboard Profit = upsell revenue minus the actual cost of products sold.

Add product costs (Settings → Product Cost) to unlock the full range. Without them, offers still run — just at full price.

What you'll need

  • Lifetimely paid plan
  • Order history (to find pairings)
  • Product costs (COGS) — optional, but required to test discounts
  • The Lifetimely post-purchase extension, enabled in Shopify checkout settings
  • Shopify Plus for checkout upsells and cross-surface journeys

Getting started

Open the Profit Agent and click Try Upsells. It analyzes your orders and drafts a starter set — no setup required.

Review before you launch

Expand any trigger cart to see its offers, each with its discount tier and profit margin.

step-2-review-offers.png

Preview any offer exactly as a shopper will see it, or Edit it to tweak the copy and display options before launching (the discount is locked, since it's set by the experiment).

Then click Launch. If the post-purchase extension isn't on yet, a one-click Open Shopify Settings prompt appears.

Tip: If some products are missing cost data, the agent will flag it and still launch — just with fewer discount tiers. Add costs later to unlock the full range.

The Upsells dashboard

Track performance at Agents → Upsells → Upsells overview:

  • All-time totals: Revenue, Profit, Purchases, Impressions
  • Per-offer metrics: Impressions, Conversion, Revenue, and date created
  • Grouped by trigger, so you can compare discount tiers for the same pairing side by side
  • Active and Archived tabs to filter

Newly launched offers show 0 impressions until shoppers start seeing them — that's expected.

Guardrails

Set the rules the agent must follow at Agents → Upsells → Guardrails.

Rules

step-6-guardrails-rules.png

  • Profit Margin Floor — minimum margin after any discount; tiers that breach it are never tested. No default (10–20% is typical).
  • Full-price offers only — no discounts.
  • Don't offer products already in the order.
  • Don't show offers for subscription orders.
  • Language & Urgency — tone (Casual / Formal / Professional / Playful) and urgency (Mild / Medium / High) for AI copy.
  • Prohibited Terms — words the agent must never use.

Exclusions

Block specific products, collections, or tags from ever being offered — useful for gift cards, low-margin items, or discontinued stock.

Store surfaces

At Agents → Upsells → Store Surfaces - you control how offers look, with a live preview: title and announcement text, button copy, layout, and display options. Changes apply to all active offers on that surface.

Advanced (Shopify Plus)

Plus stores unlock two additional capabilities:

Checkout upsells

Offers shown on the Shopify checkout page, before payment — a high-intent moment while the customer is still completing their order. Checkout appearance is configured on its own tab under Store Surfaces.

Cross-surface journeys

journey is one experiment that chains offers across surfaces and adapts to the shopper:

  1. an offer at checkout,
  2. accepted → a post-purchase upsell,
  3. declined → a post-purchase downsell.

So the agent optimizes the whole sequence, not one isolated impression. On Plus, journeys are the default.

You can preview any offer exactly as a shopper would see it before launching.

Ongoing optimization

Once live, the agent keeps working: it promotes clear winners so they keep running and surfaces new cart patterns for you to try. Ask "How are my upsells performing?" anytime and it tiers your offers — strong / underperforming / insufficient data — with next steps.

Troubleshooting

Q. Offers aren't showing to customers.

A. The post-purchase extension is probably not enabled. Check your Shopify admin under Settings → Checkout, and enable the Lifetimely post-purchase extension.

Q. The agent only proposes full-price offers.

A. Cost data (COGS) is missing, so the agent can't calculate margin-safe discounts. Add product costs at Settings → Product Cost.

Q. Checkout upsells or journeys aren't available.

A. These require Shopify Plus. Non-Plus stores can still run post-purchase upsells.

Q. "Analytics aren't available yet" on the dashboard.

A. Normal for newly launched offers — impression data appears once the first shoppers see the offer, typically within 24–48 hours depending on traffic.

Q. The agent archived an offer I wanted to keep.

A. Archived offers are on the Archived tab with their performance data preserved. Ask the agent to recreate a version of it.

Q. Discounts are narrower than expected.

A. If your margin floor is high relative to your costs, the agent trims discount tiers that would breach it. Lower the floor or add accurate COGS to open up more options.

Notes

  • Offers are A/B tests. Each pairing runs at full price, 5%, and 10% off at once; traffic shifts to the winner.
  • Offers are immutable. To change one, archive it and ask the agent to create a replacement.
  • Cost data unlocks the most. With COGS in place the agent can safely test discounts and optimize on real profit; without it, offers run at full price.
